All your coffee are belong to Gabe!

Location: The Cravat
Time: N/A. (Though for all intents and purposes it is morning.)

This morning, as with many mornings, Gabe's first thought was one word. This one word was 'coffee.' He carefully extricated himself from his and Jeannot's bed, making sure not to wake his love as he did. He left the room quietly and went down the stairs, looking for any new room, hopefully one containing a coffee-maker and some grounds. As luck ((or possibly the BC's inherent MKCSR powers)) would have it, the first room he decided to explore was the kitchen, the coffee-maker on the counter like a gift from G-d. He only had to look through two cupboards before finding the coffee grounds and cups, and he set about making it, humming Chelsea Hotel #2 very loudly to himself. Once done, he sat upon the counter, impatiently watching it percolate.

Jeannot yawned and stretched, his mind pleasantly empty, and opened his eyes to see that Gabe had gone. He sat up quickly and looked around, but his lover was definitely not in the room. He brushed away his immediate concerned reaction, and set about dressing himself so that he could go to find him.

Wandering down the hall, he hesitated before the other upstairs door before deciding that Gabe was certainly not in there, and hurried down the stairs. He peered into an empty room or two before his feet led him to the kitchen. Jeannot smiled at the sight of his love perched on the counter. "Bonjour, amour," he greeted him, and came to stand beside Gabe, looking around him curiously.

Holmes woke up. This development was not one he approved of, particularly as he was lying on the floor without blankets or pillows. Luckily, years of his profession had given him the ability to sleep where ever he might need to. They had neglected, however, to give him the ability to wake up comfortably. Aching, he got up, refusing adamantly to look over his shoulder at Watson. With that uncomfortable, fuzzy feeling that comes from sleeping in one's clothes, he made his way as efficiently as possible down the stairs. Hearing voices from the kitchen, he poked his head in owlishly. "Oh, good morning," he said, owlishly blinking sleep from his eyes.

"Good morning!" Gabe replied, rather cheerily, and hopped down from the counter, taking Jeannot's hand and kissing him once, very chastely. "I'm making coffee," he said, rather proud of himself, and gestured to the coffee-maker. He pulled Jeannot closer to him, wrapping his arms rather loosely around his love's waist. "Did you sleep well?" he asked.

Jeannot smiled up at Gabe. "I have rarely slept better, aimé," he told him truthfully. He glanced over at Holmes as he entered the kitchen, but didn't pull away from Gabe, feeling a bit more comfortable with the Englishman's presence now that he was looking as just-woken-up as Jeannot himself felt. "Good morning, M. Holmes," he greeted the detective politely.

"Good morning," replied Holmes, politely although rather muzzily. "Coffee sounds like the most ingenious idea I've heard for a long time, thank you, Rosenberg. Is there any food? Because the idea of food would elevate you above the position of genius into guru, or something else suitably exalted."

"There's some dry goods in the cupboard above me," Gabe replied, moving himself and Jeannot slightly over to allow Holmes access to it. "For everything else, try the fridge." He took arm from around Jeannot to point it out. It was in the other corner of the room and covered with bright, plastic, letter magnets and magnetic cut up poetry, neither of which seemed to be configured in any order.

"Fridge?" Holmes said, his sleepiness not assisting his general confusion. "That thing, you mean?" He walked suspiciously over to it, as though afraid it might bite him, and reached out to open the door. His eyes widened as a gust of cold pressurized air blew out at him. "My God," he cried, before he could resist, "That's incredible!"

Jeannot gasped, seeing how the little light inside the fridge lit itself as though by magic when Holmes opened the door. "Who lit that light?" he asked Gabe, a bit awed and frightened. "And what is this cupboard?" He inched forward, putting a hand out to feel the coldness radiating from the fridge. "Dieu," he breathed, interested.

Gabe laughed. "No," he told Holmes. "It's technology. And, Jean, the light turns on by itself. When you open the door a switch is activated and it turns on the bulb. It's for keeping perishable foods cold." He leaned over, trying to get a view of the fridge's contents around Holmes. He couldn't, really. "What's in there, anyhow?" he asked.

Jeannot peered into the fridge from behind Holmes. "Food?" he responded uncertainly -- much of it was unfamiliar to him. He reached in hesitantly to draw out a paper carton. "Milk," he said, reading the side of the package, and looked up with wonder. "In a container of paper?"

Jeannot shrugged and set the milk aside, peering inside the fridge again. "Apples," he said, looking delighted. "Fresh ones, aimé. And... more fruit, and some vegetables, and..." He pulled out a loaf of bread in a clear bag that crinkled at him, looking at it in curiosity. "Is this bread?" he asked, unsure. "What is it wrapped in?" He poked at the plastic, eyes widening when it bent but didn't break. "It is like glass made into cloth," he said, eyeing the package with mistrust.

"Hmm. A few cans, what appears to be some sort of packaged meat. . .milk. . .good heavens, this thing must be useful." Holmes put one slightly tentative hand into the fridge and moved a few things around. "I am not a cook, although I can deal with the very rudiments. And you both?"

"I'm not a chef or anything, but I can keep myself fed," Gabe replied, and took the plastic-bagged bread from Jeannot. "This is plastic, love," he said, smiling. "And not all plastic looks like this. Some is clear and bendable, but sometimes it's coloured and hard." He took one of the letters off the fridge, picking the 'J' especially, and pressed it into Jeannot's hand. "This is plastic as well. What the plastic looks like has to do with what chemicals are used to make it, mostly." He shrugged and undid the twistie on the plastic bag. "Toast, anyone?" he asked, feeling generous.

Jeannot turned the plastic letter over in his hand, marveling at it. He looked up at Gabe's question, puzzledly. "Toast?" he asked. "Do you mean-- oh, the bread, over a fire?" He smiled. "Please."

He turned to Holmes. "You can cook?" he asked, surprised. "Why?"

"Certainly, thank you," Holmes said. "And for Watson, if you don't mind. He'll want breakfast when he wakes up. I swear, the man eats like nothing I've ever seen. But this plastic -" He picked another letter off of the refridgerator, privately noting its magnetism. "Remarkable. What is its chemical composition?" Holmes being Holmes, it did not occur to him that Gabe probably wouldn't know.

((Sorry about that, didn't see your post.))

"I can cook," Holmes explained, "because I'm often forced to live alone for long periods of time, working on a client's case. I try to keep the more dangerous part of my business as far away from our - pardon, I mean from my home as possible."

"I haven't a clue what its chemical composition is," Gabe admitted, taking two slices of bread from the bag. "I honestly spent more time skipping Chem than I did attending the class." He placed the slices in the toaster on the counter and pressed them down. He fiddled with the knob, unsure of how to set it. He finally picked 'two,' as if it wasn't toasty enough he could always just put them in for longer. "Is there any butter in there?" he asked.

"I believe so - but what on earth is that? Some sort of heating device?" Holmes looked at the toaster as though it might burst into flames at any moment.

"Toaster," Gabe replied, simply. "It toasts. And give me the butter, would you?"

"It is from the future," Jeannot murmured to Holmes, awed. He peered underneath the toaster, expecting to find a small fire there. Not seeing the source of the heat, he looked up at Gabe, raising his eyebrows in puzzlement. "Is the fire somehow inside?" he guessed, bewildered.

Jan. 28th, 2007 06:32 am (UTC)
((Aww. "It is from the future." For some reason this line is the cutest thing ever.))

"Not fire, no," Gabe said. "It's heated electrically." He tilted the toaster towards them so that they could see the inside, the orange-red heating mechanism and the slices of bread themselves. "And I'm too tired to explain electricity," he added. "Ask Holmes."

Holmes gingerly reached into the fridge for the butter and handed it to Gabe, still slightly distrustful of the new technology. "A toaster," he said, feigning confidence. "I see."

Jeannot turned to Holmes expectantly. "Electricity," he repeated. "Do you know what it is, M. Holmes?"

"Yes, but. . ." Holmes shook his head, not wanting to admit exactly how old fashioned he could be about some things. "I suppose I ought to wake Watson," he remarked, valiantly trying to change the subject. "If we let him sleep he'll do it until evening tomorrow."

The toast popped. It wasn't toasted at all, and Gabe pushed it back down rather angrily. "Wake him if you like," he told Holmes. "I suppose he'll be wanting some coffee as well?"

Jeannot jumped as the bread popped out of the toaster, startled by the sudden noise. He turned pink, embarrassed by his fright at such a little thing, and turned to inspect the rest of the cabinets and cupboards in the room to distract himself.
