All your coffee are belong to Gabe!

Location: The Cravat
Time: N/A. (Though for all intents and purposes it is morning.)

This morning, as with many mornings, Gabe's first thought was one word. This one word was 'coffee.' He carefully extricated himself from his and Jeannot's bed, making sure not to wake his love as he did. He left the room quietly and went down the stairs, looking for any new room, hopefully one containing a coffee-maker and some grounds. As luck ((or possibly the BC's inherent MKCSR powers)) would have it, the first room he decided to explore was the kitchen, the coffee-maker on the counter like a gift from G-d. He only had to look through two cupboards before finding the coffee grounds and cups, and he set about making it, humming Chelsea Hotel #2 very loudly to himself. Once done, he sat upon the counter, impatiently watching it percolate.

"Mm," Gabe confirmed, leaning down to kiss Jeannot's forehead. "Or at least something you've never told anyone."

Jeannot considered for a moment. "I have told you, already, things that I have never told anyone," he said, still thinking. "What is there left to say?" He looked up, thinking of something at last. "Well," he said slowly, uncertain if Gabe would want to hear it, "there is a story. It is not really a secret, but we do not speak of it, in my family, and..." Jeannot shrugged and smiled up at Gabe. "You may think it interesting. I'll tell you, if you like, but not here in the hallway. Let us find somewhere more pleasant to sit, since the kitchen is taken." He laughed, confident that the two Englishmen were making progress, since they hadn't heard anything out of the kitchen for several minutes.

Gabe smiled. "I suspect Holmes knows we're eavesdropping, anyhow," he said, and, hand in hand with Jeannot, began to walk down the hall, not exactly sure where to. "And I'd love to hear your story, secret or not, bel."

Jeannot smiled and squeezed Gabe's hand. He peered into the doorways as they moved along the hallway, finding nothing but empty rooms until the very last room, which contained a couch, for some reason. Jeannot nodded, pleased. "Here," he decided, and entered the small room, looking around curiously, but finding nothing but empty walls and colorless surroundings. Sprawling on the couch, he patted the couch next to him for Gabe to sit as well. "I want to make this place more beautiful," he told Gabe, eyes lighting up with interest. "Did you say, last night, that there was paint for walls in the closet?"

Gabe followed Jeannot into the last room and lay down on the couch, placing his head in Jeannot's lap. "Just you being here makes this place more beautiful," he said, smiling up at his love. "But yes, there's wall-paint in the closet." He laughed. "There's everything in that closet. I'm not exactly sure how it's possible, but that goes for most of what's been going on lately."

Jeannot smiled down at him, utterly content, and brushed one finger tenderly across Gabe's cheek. "Magic," he suggested, almost serious. He leaned back against the couch, lifting his gaze to the plain ceiling. "Do you believe in magic, aimé?" he asked.

Gabe closed his eyes happily as Jeannot's finger brushed across his cheek, relaxing totally. He felt warm and content, like he was lying in the sun, on a hot rock, drying off, or curled up in blankets after a long, cold, walk. "I believe," he murmured, "that may I be starting to."

Jeannot nodded thoughtfully. "I always have," he said quietly. "But-- I do not believe, as the priests tell us, that all magic is the work of the devil." He looked down again at Gabe, seeing that he was utterly relaxed, and smiled. "Do you believe in angels, then?" He moved his hand to stroke Gabe's hair gently, as he would a sleeping child's. "Guardian angels, who watch over us and protect us?"

Gabe shrugged. "I don't really know," he said. "Haven't ever really thought about it." He paused for a moment, thinking intensely, and then smiled. "They'd need a rather lot of angels for that, I think. We humans are a troublesome bunch."

"Yes," Jeannot agreed rather solemnly, and was silent for a moment. "I have a guardian angel," he murmured at last, a bit shy. "Or I did, when I was young. That is the story I wanted to tell you."

Gabe opened his eyes to look up at Jeannot curiously. "Why the past tense?" he asked. "Did your angel fly off?"

Jeannot smiled down at Gabe, stroking his cheek again. "Not this angel," he said softly, and pressed two fingers to his lips and then to Gabe's, a sort of kiss by proxy. Growing thoughtful again, he shrugged. "My angel... I don't know," Jeannot told him truthfully. "I do not think-- well, let me tell you the story, and then you will know as much as I do."

He settled a bit more comfortably on the couch. "The part that is my family's secret that is not a secret comes first," he began. "I have told you that I have three brothers, and that I am the eldest." Jeannot stroked Gabe's hair absent-mindedly, the look in his eyes faraway. "Well. My mother also bore a girl-child at the same time as me. I came first, by a few minutes, and then my sister."

Concern clouded Gabe's face. "Was she still-born?" he asked, quietly, not wanting to upset his love.

Jeannot shook his head, smiling down at Gabe. "No, she was born alive, and lived for four years. Her name was Anne-Marthe." He shrugged. "Then we had the fever, both of us. She was weaker, and so she died first, and everyone expected that I would die as well, but--" He grinned, a bit self-conscious. "My angel, aimé. That is my first true memory: lying in bed with this beautiful angel all in white standing next to me, telling me not to be afraid."

"Is that why you became a painter, Jean?" Gabe asked, eyes closed, trying to picture what his love had described.

Jeannot blinked, a bit confused. "Because of my angel?" He considered the idea, then shook his head. "No. It was Alexandre who made me a painter, I think. I never painted or drew anything at all, before I met him." He could say his first love's name now without the stab of guilt, and Jeannot counted that as a small victory. He smiled again and combed his fingers through Gabe's hair, happy. "No, mon amour, but my angel saved me, certainly."

"It's a good thing he did, too," Gabe said, smiling up at Jeannot. He lifted one hand to trace the line of his love's jaw. "Because I don't know what I'd do without you."

Jeannot reached up to take Gabe's hand. "I'm glad he did, too," he said softly, and kissed Gabe's palm lovingly. He was quiet for a moment, thinking. "The second time my angel saved me," he went on, "I was perhaps six or seven years old. I had gone with my father to visit a cousin, and I slipped away from my father to chase a dog down the street." He laughed and shook his head. "And I was lost, in an unfamiliar district far from home, and very frightened. I hid in an alley, because there were so many strangers." Jeannot smiled. "But my angel was there, of course. He looked like any other man, but I recognized him, and he took my hand and led me back to a street I knew, so that I could find my way home."

Gabe closed his eyes to listen to the story, his mind painting water-colour pictures of the incident in his head. He smiled. "It sounds," he murmured, "like a fairy-tale story."

"It does, doesn't it?" Jeannot nodded thoughtfully. "But it is true, aimé. I tried to tell my mother, but she told me it did not happen, and..." He smiled. "I almost believed her. I think I did, for a time, convince myself that I had imagined it all, but then I saw my angel once more." Jeannot paused and closed his eyes to remember better.

"It was just before my father died," he went on after a moment. "Soon after my thirteenth birthday, in the summer. I was walking with a group of the boys of my neighborhood on one of the smaller bridges across the river. Being only boys, we were playing and making dares for one another, trying to see who could best the others. And one boy dared me to walk on the edge of the bridge, the barrier--" He sketched the shape of the feature with his hands, not sure what it was called. "And, since I was foolish and young, I did." He shook his head at his idiocy. "I was just in the middle of the bridge, and I put my foot down on a patch of moss, and I slipped--" He broke off and shuddered, remembering the awful sensation of knowing, for one terrible moment, that he was about to fall, knowing that there was nothing he could do to save himself.

Gabe felt Jeannot's distress at the memory and took his hand, carefully entwining their fingers, in an attempt to comfort him. "You fell?" he prompted.

Jeannot shook his head, gripping Gabe's hand gratefully. "I was about to fall," he answered softly. "I felt myself slipping, and I knew I was going to fall into the river, and then--" He looked down at Gabe seriously. "My angel was there, aimé. He was just behind me, and he wrapped his arms around me. I felt it," he added, aware that it sounded unbelievable. "He held me for a moment, and whispered in my ear, n'aie pas peur, not to be afraid, and then he set me down gently on the bridge again." He shook his head, still awed by that moment.

"Maybe that wasn't the last time you saw him," Gabe suggested. "Maybe, ever since then, he's just been waiting on the edges of things, giving you a push in the right direction, but not obviously enough to be noticed, just making sure you go where you need to go and meet who you have to meet." He smiled. "Making sure you play your proper part in life."

Jeannot smiled, pleased with the thought, and cupped Gabe's cheeks in his hands. "Then he was certainly at the place where we met," he said softly, and bent down to kiss Gabe gently. He pulled away after a moment and considered the idea more seriously. "I always thought," he said after a moment, "that he left because I met Alexandre that year, soon after my father died." He shrugged, a bit self-conscious. "I thought of him as my guardian, a bit, but..." Jeannot shook his head. "That is silly," he murmured, though he still looked thoughtful.

"Why's it silly?" Gabe asked. "It's not as though there's a set of rules about guardian angels. It's all belief, and belief starts with what one man thought."
