Home sweet home

((New post, because it is good for the universe. I would like to applaud all of the Cravat's fine members for not making a home/Holmes pun, nor yet a Holmesosexual pun. Not yet.))

Location: The Cravat
Time: Out of time

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson stumbled out of the portal, Watson still a little wide eyed at the prospect of time travel, Holmes retaining his famous composure. They stood in wait of the others, avoiding each other's eyes.

Watson sat down heavily beside Jeannot, almost wanting to pat him on the shoulder, but unsure and Victorian. "I know precisely what you mean," Watson said with feeling. "I do. I left him, you see. Holmes. Now," he added hastily, "I know, I know he's a - well - a cantankerous bastard at times, but -" Watson broke off, shrugging. "He is my friend. And I left him." He cast his eyes down, somewhat guilty as well. "So what I mean to say, Mr. Bonnaire, is that I - in some obscure way - do know how you feel."

((I do that ALL THE TIME. Don't worry.))

Jeannot pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes hard for a moment, Watson's words helping him to recover his presence. At last the Frenchman dropped his hands into his lap, twisting them together. He looked over at Holmes for a moment, then back at Watson, eyes still damp. "He is your friend," he repeated the doctor's words softly. "And he was once your-- your cher ami, your dear friend," using Chrétien's term, not certain he could imagine calling Holmes anyone's lover. The Frenchman met Watson's eyes. "Why did you leave?" he asked quietly, keeping the discussion just between the two of them, not wanting the others to overhear.

Watson shook his head sadly, a rueful smile on his lips. "I. . .I fell in love. With someone else. A lady," he added for good measure. "And. . ." he trailed off, sighing. "Is it possible to love two people at once?"

"I believe so," Jeannot answered, impulsively reaching out to touch the other man's arm gently. He looked so sad, and Jeannot felt as though the Englishman needed comfort now as much as he did. He took a deep breath. "I love Alexandre. I have since I was very young, and I will for the rest of my life," he told the doctor, "and I thought that there could be no one else for me, but..." He turned to look at Gabe, his face serious. "I was wrong," he ended quietly. "I was very much wrong."

He hesitated, looking again between Watson and Holmes, who seemed to be arguing with Gabe. "You love M. Holmes?" he asked at last. "Why? I mean--" He ducked his head, abashed by his rudeness. "I'm sorry, monsieur le docteur. It's only--" Jeannot paused again. "He frightens me, a little. Is he always so..." Jeannot waved his hands, unable to think of the right words. "Like that?" he finished lamely.

Watson's first reaction to Jeannot's question was to laugh. "Well," he said pleasantly, the humor overpowering his natural prudeishness, "No. No. Not at all, in fact. He can be very. . ." The doctor shrugged. "Not like that," he finished, likewise lamely. "However," he added, his manner friendly now, "you must call me simply Watson. None of this monsieur le docteur. It's quite all right."

Jeannot smiled, pleased. "Watson, then," he said. "And I am Jeannot, to everyone except my mother, who will always call me Jean-Marie." The Frenchman laughed softly. "Well, and so does my patron, when he is in a mood." He met Watson's eyes again, grateful to be distracted from thoughts of what had occurred previous to their arrival here. "And you are a doctor?" he asked, curious about his new friend. "Why did you become a doctor? Was your father one also?"

"I am a doctor because I like to fix what is broken," Watson admitted. "Minds, bodies, anything you like." He glanced over at Holmes, who seemed somewhat alarmed. "I suppose that explains some of my association with Holmes."

Jeannot tilted his head to the side, considering these words. "What is broken, in your friend?" he wondered aloud. "Does he allow you to help him to mend it, whatever it is?"

"It is what I suppose might be termed his heart," Watson said quietly. "Too much loneliness, I think, broke it for him. And no, he does not allow me to mend it. Not any longer. For a time he might have, but now I believe I may have undone all the good I did before. If indeed," he added, his voice almost inaudible now, "I did him any good"

The sorrow and guilt in Watson's voice hit close to home for Jeannot, and he hesitantly reached for the doctor's hand, holding on to him to comfort both of them. He bit his lip, not sure what to say. "I think," he said slowly, at last, "I think that you have done something for him, at least. You are his friend, and he does not seem the sort to have many close friends at all." He thought for a moment. "Perhaps-- even if you are no longer his dear friend, his cher ami, you are still closer to him than anyone," he said softly, his instinct telling him that this ought to be true. "Perhaps that is enough, and in time he will allow you to help him once again."

"I think I may have done him some good already, actually," Watson remarked, seeing how distressed Holmes was becoming. "That expression can only come from his realization of a certain thing which I ostensibly forgot to bring here to. . .where ever we are." He resisted the sudden urge to grin devilishly. "He possesses an unhealthy habit, you see," he explained.
mouette_mots
Jan. 10th, 2007 02:42 am (UTC)
Jeannot blinked, trying to think what that unhealthy habit might be. "Drink?" he asked, looking up at Holmes speculatively. "He doesn't seem the sort, somehow. Although," he added, struck with a sudden thought, "M. Holmes is much like one of my friends, I think, and he once drank a great deal." He shook his head at the thought of Rémy. "Then my friend fell in love," he told Watson, "and he doesn't, anymore." Jeannot smiled, with a glance at Gabe. "Love makes one a better person, if it is true," he said softly. "Do you think so?"
simplysidhe
Jan. 10th, 2007 03:00 am (UTC)
"No. Not drink. But love? Oh, yes. My wife has -" Watson was about to say, cured me of my immoral tendencies, but then he remembered that the man to whom he spoke possessed precisely those. "Or rather. . .I mean, yes. Yes, love does make one a better person, it is true."

Jeannot nodded, glancing again at Gabe, grateful to have him here. He could do this, he thought-- he had gotten over Alexandre's death once before; he could do it again. Turning his attention to Watson again, he smiled. "I thought once that I might get married," he told the other man. "I always wondered what it might be like, if I had, but--" He shook his head. "I'm glad, now, that she had the good sense to refuse," he said, slanting another fond look at his lover. "How long have you been married, Watson?"
simplysidhe
Jan. 10th, 2007 03:15 am (UTC)
"Three years," Watson answered pleasantly. "Oh, marriage is a wonderful thing. My wife is a lovely creature, and I adore her." He was plainly being honest, Watson had never been a good liar. "Perhaps though, it would not have suited you."
mouette_mots
Jan. 10th, 2007 03:27 am (UTC)
"Perhaps not," Jeannot agreed with equanimity. "I do not love her -- or rather, I am not in love with her, though I like her very much." He smiled and patted Watson's hand, easily comfortable with him, as he was with most people. "I congratulate you. Three years and still in love with your wife!" Jeannot shook his head at that. "Do you have children?" he inquired pleasantly.

Watson's face darkened just a shade, pleasant as Jeannot's company was. "We do not," he said quietly. "For various reasons. We do have Holmes as a good friend, however, which can be almost the same thing," he added, somewhat more cheerfully.

Jeannot laughed at the thought, shaking his head, but quickly grew thoughtful. "Your wife likes M. Holmes?" he wondered. "Does she know--" He stopped and glanced at Watson quickly, worried that he was moving into uncomfortable territory. "I'm sorry," he apologized hastily. "I didn't mean to ask." Jeannot sighed. "I didn't mean a lot of things, today," he said, almost to himself.

Jan. 10th, 2007 06:08 am (UTC)
"No, she does not know," Watson said miserably. "Although I fear she should have guessed by now. I haven't been, well, entirely faithful." He paused to look miserable. "And telling you that is almost the fifeenth unbelievable thing I have done today."

Jeannot blinked at him for a moment in silence, unsure what to say. "Oh," he finally said. "Well. I suppose it isn't the sort of thing that comes up in dinner conversation, is it?" He pressed Watson's hand again, giving him a smile that he hoped was reassuring. "It must be difficult for you," he said quietly. "I'm sorry."

Jan. 10th, 2007 06:17 am (UTC)
"It must be difficult for her, I think you mean," Watson said wryly. "No, it's certainly not the sort of thing that comes up in dinner conversation. You're French, so I suppose it's all different there." Watson, like a good nineteenth century middle class Englishman, was completely unaware that the rest of the world was anything less than another planet.

Jan. 10th, 2007 06:28 am (UTC)
Jeannot raised his eyebrows at this. "Different?" he said doubtfully. "Perhaps. At least," he added quietly, "I have heard that they-- they hang men in England, for buggery." He shuddered at the thought. "We do not do such, in France, but it is still a danger, to take a man as a lover." Jeannot shrugged off the distasteful thoughts, looking up with a smile. "Such men must merely be more careful, and more secret, than others. Is it different in England, in your time?"
simplysidhe
Jan. 11th, 2007 12:21 am (UTC)
"They no longer hang men, but it certainly never - could never - sit well with the population." Watson shook his head. "One may be sent to jail for it, however. Two years, at maximum, with hard labor."
mouette_mots
Jan. 11th, 2007 05:05 am (UTC)
Jeannot's eyes widened, hardly able to believe this. "That is less than the punishment for theft, in my France," he said frankly.* "I had thought, from how frightened M. Holmes was when he came to fetch us, that there was more to fear." He paused, searching Watson's face. "But I suppose, for a man as respected as M. Holmes must be, the larger fear is not the law, but the judgment of the people," he said, not quite certain if he was right. "Is that it?"

((*Armed robbery, at least. Les Misérables has taught me well: five years' hard labor at Toulon for the theft of bread! ;-) ))
