Home sweet home

((New post, because it is good for the universe. I would like to applaud all of the Cravat's fine members for not making a home/Holmes pun, nor yet a Holmesosexual pun. Not yet.))

Location: The Cravat
Time: Out of time

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson stumbled out of the portal, Watson still a little wide eyed at the prospect of time travel, Holmes retaining his famous composure. They stood in wait of the others, avoiding each other's eyes.

Holmes sighed deeply, the breath rattling in his tobacco addled lungs. "My upbringing is showing. Now, as I believe you know, I am an eminently rational man. I would flatter myself I am very good at being an eminently rational man. Now, I am aware that I - or - I mean of course, men who - or - oh, why bother with pretense. I am well aware that I experience all of the symptoms of 'love,' however, the rational logic of my day dictates that it is not possible except between male and female." He spread his thin hands despairingly. "What am I to think?"

"That the rational logic of your day is wrong," Gabe replied, simply. "After all, it took people years to figure out that the earth revolves around the sun, and I'd say that love is much more complex, wouldn't you?"

Holmes blinked. "Well, certainly love is very complex, which is why I seem to be in such a very objectionable state - But what did you say? The earth revolves around. . .? Oh, yes. Watson told me that once. Fascinating thing, though not terribly useful," he added blithely, as though it were perfectly normal not to know something of such a basic nature.

((Yes, he's really that bad. . .see the sixth paragraph of this.))

((Eeee! I read that! Now I just need to find the book so I can finish it.))

"Oh." Gabe murmured, slightly astonished. "Well," he continued. "There goes my analogy, but my point still stands, I hope? People make assumptions all the time because it's what's accepted to be right, and it never occurs to them that everyone else could be wrong too. Heterosexism was one of those things until rather recently, even for me."

"Hetero. . .from the Greek heteros? Different? Oh, I see. Yes. Well." Holmes chewed his bottom lip. "That, I fear I shall have to carefully consider. However, we have problems of a more practical nature." He furrowed his brows. "I apologize for my earlier accusation of opium addiction. You have been. . ." Holmes struggled for the right word. "Helpful."

"Well, I'm glad I helped someone," Gabe said, taking a quick look at where Watson was still speaking his Jeannot. "And I've been called worse than an opium fiend, don't worry. I'll manage."

"Oh, has Watson been being understanding and kind again?" Holmes asked. "He does that. I don't know how to stop him, I fear." He shrugged, love for his friend obvious in his eyes if not his words.

Gabe laughed. "Come on," he chided. "You wouldn't want to stop him if you could. It's part of why you love him, admit it."

Holmes stared at Gabe for a moment, then realized that his mouth was slightly open, making him look like a fish. "I suppose that I will have to stop twitching every time you say something like that," he managed slowly. Perhaps, late at night, he had occasionally considered what he came to think of as the Question of Love, but no one had ever simply articulated his deepest thoughts to him. "I. . .yes. Yes, I suppose that is part of why. Yes, it definitely is." He breathed out slowly. "I hope you realize that you are now responsible for my becoming completely immoral," he added helplessly, smiling.

"You're welcome," Gabe replied, more than slightly proud. "And if you're twitchy about what I'm saying now, wait until I get drunk, or high." He paused, realizing his mistake. "About that..." he mumbled.

"High?" Holmes cocked an eyebrow. "I think I know what that particular twentieth century term means." He rocked back on his heels, smiling, but there was no more malice in his smile. "If it is not opium, what is it?"

"Marijuana?" Gabe replied. "Or maybe it's still called hashish in your time, I don't know." He looked quite guilty. "That's it, though, I swear, nothing heavier," he said, slightly defensive. "Not anymore, anyway. Not since I was a kid. All it takes is one bad experience with methamphetamines, and why the fuck am I explaining myself to a coke-head?" he finished, changing thoughts midsentence.

"A what? No, never mind, I think I can guess." Holmes shrugged. "It is immaterial to me, in any case. So. You are a hashish smoker. You needn't worry, I associate it with nothing more scandalous than the Romantic school of poetry." He paused. "Which is, regardless, fairly scandalous, but some things cannot be helped."

"Honestly?" Gabe said. "All the scandals I've caused would've happened even without the drugs." He smirked at Holmes, and then it occurred to him that even he wasn't exactly sure if he was joking.

Holmes nodded, raising his eyebrows. "I see. I have clients like you, desperate to preserve their reputation. You don't seem at all desperate, though. I'm beginning to think that perhaps the future is a pleasant place to be."

"What reputation?" Gabe asked, entirely serious. "If I have a reputation I seem to have misplaced it." He laughed. "And my time is nice enough, though I think you'd be more than a bit shocked at first. It lacks Victorian... morals, I suppose you'd say. Women wear pants, men wear t-shirts. People cuss each other out from taxi-cabs, which you don't even have, do you?" He shrugged. "It's different. Better for me, but, then again, I was born there."

Jan. 10th, 2007 04:14 am (UTC)
"We have hansom cabs, which I suppose are something like these 'taxis.' What does the T in T-shirt stand for? And is cuss a corruption of curse?" After his initial rush of curiousity, Holmes cringed at his lack of knowledge. "Do you realize I haven't asked this many questions unrelated to an investigation since grammar school?"

Jan. 10th, 2007 04:23 am (UTC)
"You know," Gabe replied. "I don't actually know what the T stands for. I've never stopped to think about it. And yes, cuss does mean curse. As for your last question, I'd say we can make an exception for time travel, don't you?" He laughed. "G-d. Time travel. What the hell?" He shook his head, still chuckling. "Part of me still refuses to believe all of this, and the sad bit is that it isn't the time travel giving me second thoughts about what's reality or not."
simplysidhe
Jan. 10th, 2007 04:43 am (UTC)
"Yes, I suppose an exception would be acceptable in this case," Holmes laughed. "And no, I cannot believe it either. What makes a skeptic of you? The time travel itself? The parallel universes? The. . ." Holmes glanced at Jeannot. "The Frenchman?"

Gabe laughed. "It's stupid, isn't it?" he said, voice soft and full of love. "I just didn't think I'd be able to do this again, not after the first time, but..." He closed his eyes for a second, gathering his thoughts. "I don't think I've ever loved being wrong this much," he concluded.

"My God, you are quite far gone, aren't you?" Holmes remarked. "I've never loved being wrong. I've enjoyed it, certainly, but. . ." He trailed off. "Well. I suppose we ought to be contemplating living arrangments."

"I don't fall in love often, Holmes," Gabe replied. "Allow me my stupid wistful sighs and my careless hyperboles. As for living arrangements, Jean and I will share a bed, and if there's space perhaps we could have our own room? And how you and Watson want to arrange yourselves is entirely up to you two. One bed, two." He shrugged. "Whatever makes you happy."

Jan. 10th, 2007 05:22 am (UTC)
"Yes, you and Mr. Bonnaire are definitely having some sort of seperate sleeping arrangement," Holmes said fervently. "I may have admitted to being an immoral, libertine of an invert, Rosenburg, but I have a ways to go yet. There are only two rooms up there in any case, and so I suppose. . .well, this will be fascinating." He shook his head. "I would go over and speak to them, but. . ." Holmes grinned. "Watson looks happy, and I doubt my presence would assist that mood."

"They do look happy, don't they?" Gabe said, watching Jeannot carefully, not wanting to miss even the smallest moment.

"Oh, and," Gabe began, turning his head to look at Holmes again. "Out of the two of us, I'd out-Libertine you any day of the week. I've done things that would make your Victorian brain explode, so don't call yourself an immoral and libertine invert. I'll just take the libertine bit as a challenge and then I may have to give you a crash-course in late twentieth century morality, not to mention modern terminology." He shook his head. "'Invert,'" he muttered. "Christ."

"Our centuries have different standards," Holmes replied, stung. "While I do have no doubt that you would be able to, as you so charmingly put it, make my brain explode. And what, may I ask, is wrong with the term, 'invert?'"
