Home sweet home

((New post, because it is good for the universe. I would like to applaud all of the Cravat's fine members for not making a home/Holmes pun, nor yet a Holmesosexual pun. Not yet.))

Location: The Cravat
Time: Out of time

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson stumbled out of the portal, Watson still a little wide eyed at the prospect of time travel, Holmes retaining his famous composure. They stood in wait of the others, avoiding each other's eyes.

Gabe shook his head. "I'd hate being Victorian," he said, and then laughed. "It seems most Victorians hate being Victorian, as well."

"I don't," Holmes said lightly, then laughed as well. "Which doesn't make an enormous amount of sense. Regardless, I fear I am a chronic patriot. And in any case, Her Majesty has upon occasion availed herself of some of my services. So it would be disparaging a client. But you," he said, with a sharp, amused glance at Gabe, "you would be a terrible Victorian."

"Oh, terrible. Possibly the worst ever," Gabe agreed. "But wouldn't it be fun to see me try?" He grinned.

"Like nails on a chalkboard, actually, Rosenburg," Holmes replied, all deadpan. "Actually, though," he amended, smiling, "it would be intensely entertaining. I'm almost tempted to bring you to London and see you try. But that," he continued, face becoming somber, "would defeat our purpose here."

"It would probably also get us both killed," Gabe conceded, sadly. "And speaking of Our Purpose, how long are we going to stay here? Not that I don't enjoy your company," here he was only half sarcastic, "but mostly because it seems rather cramped and slightly lonesome, and I'd be lying if I said that I don't expect myself to go stir-crazy very fast."

"I understand. I'm worried myself. Whatever it is that stir-crazy means, I believe I tend towards it as well. I am dreadfully easily bored, you see. Hence the cocaine. Our Purpose?" Holmes sighed. "Well, I suppose we stay until I can do something about the Professor. I have some talent for disguise, and that might - I say might - afford me some mobility in Britain."

"It's not that I get easily bored," Gabe said. "It's more that I'm used to moving about. That's why I prefer living in cities. There are so many different places all in one spot, if that makes any sense." He shrugged. "Oh, and. Are the rest of us going to be cooped up here while you go gallivanting about after Moriarty? Because I think we'll start to get rather bitter about that rather quickly. I will, certainly."

"I will not be gallivanting," Holmes asserted firmly. "I do not gallivant well. I will be strategizing. With purpose. Precisely. And I will not be away much of the time - saving my own neck is, I fear, high on my personal list of priorities. But what will you do to pass the time? Something with the. . .things. . .in the closet, perhaps. They are all we really have, here."

((God, I still have no idea what The Thing is. Help?))

Gabe laughed, slightly uncomfortable. "Yes," he concluded. "I'm pretty sure there's something in there for everyone."

"By the way,' Holmes remarked curiously, "What was it that you saw in there that you did not name, but which seemed to so surprise you?"

"Remember how we were talking previously about things that would make your brain explode?" Gabe asked, and then paused. "Let's just say that I think cerebellum would be a bitch to clean up."

"Cerebellum. I see." Holmes nodded slowly. "No, actually, I don't see. Is it some sort of inappropriate apparatus?"

"Yes," Gabe replied, simply. "And let's leave it at that."

"Rosenburg, I am told that I am something of a celebrity in your time." Holmes rocked back on his heels, regarding Gabe with an amused expression. "I am sure you have heard of my insatiable curiousity."

"I have," Gabe said, getting rather tired of this. "And I'm still not going to tell you. In fact, it's one of my main reasons for not telling you."

"If you're going to be so very. . .Victorian about it," Holmes said, choosing his words pointedly, "I won't ask further." He snickered, amused. "Now then. I believe you and M. Bonnaire will be sharing a room. There are two cots in the closet. You may take one and set it up." There was an awkward pause. "I will be taking the floor in Watson's room."

"If you want to know so badly, go look," Gabe said, finishing the conversation as far as he was concerned. "And Jean and your Watson seem rather deep in conversation, so I won't interrupt." He looked over at the two of them and smiled. "Good luck getting off the floor, by the way. And I mean that sincerely, not sarcastically." He turned his smile back to Holmes and it was obvious he was really on Holmes's side, if slightly amused by the entire thing.

Holmes ran one hand through his hair, straddling the thin line between aggravation and amusement. "Thank you," he said finally. "But I was not planning upon making an effort, to be entirely honest."

"Honestly? I don't think you'll need to make much of an effort at all." Gabe looked back over at Watson and Jeannot, examining Watson slightly closer than he had before, not allowing himself to get hugely distracted by Jeannot, and shrugged after a moment of thought. "I could be wrong, though. I certainly don't know him as well as you do."

Holmes sighed. "He loves his wife," he said shortly, then shut his mouth very decisively.

Gabe shook his head. "If it was just his wife he loved," he asked. "Do you think he'd be here?"

"Rosenburg, my friend," Holmes replied miserably, "That is why he is here. He fears his wife discovering the truth. No other opinion matters to him."

"I doubt he'd spend all those years as your sidekick if your opinion didn't matter,"Gabe said, plainly. "Habits like that are hard to change."

Holmes looked consideringly at Gabe. "You're really very determined to make things look better, aren't you?" He laughed hollowly, but there was an element of sincerity to his next words. "Thank you."

"It's odd, really. I'm usually the cynical one." Gabe glanced over to the source of his optimism and noticed a particularly uncomfortable look on Watson's face. He laughed. "I think our conversations have both ended up in the same place," he remarked.
