Home sweet home

((New post, because it is good for the universe. I would like to applaud all of the Cravat's fine members for not making a home/Holmes pun, nor yet a Holmesosexual pun. Not yet.))

Location: The Cravat
Time: Out of time

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson stumbled out of the portal, Watson still a little wide eyed at the prospect of time travel, Holmes retaining his famous composure. They stood in wait of the others, avoiding each other's eyes.

Watson's explanation left Jeannot yet more in the dark. "Ah-- my nature?" he asked bemusedly, and shook his head to apologize for not understanding. "I'm sorry. My English is not yet perfect, and perhaps I do not understand. Do you mean my characteristics, or my personality?" He grinned. "Or my appearance?"

((Hurrah for the eighteenth century and its lack of the concept of sexual orientation. *whistles merrily*))

"Your - you - the sodomy," finished Watson, getting the word out of his mouth as quickly as possible, as though he might choke on it.

Jeannot raised his eyebrows, startled by this. "Oh," he murmured, still uncertain what it was that Watson meant. "Well-- perhaps. In any case, I go to confession every week, if this is what you mean." He ducked his head with a frown, puzzling over the doctor's earlier words. "But what do you mean, 'my nature'?" Jeannot wondered aloud. "'Myself'? I sleep with men on occasion, it is true, but is there something of me in the act?" He shook his head slowly, uncomprehending.

"Well - yes. I mean, don't you think it has, er, moral, well, repercussions?" Watson gestured vaguely, becoming progressively more flustered. "It's as if you don't realize. . . It is a sin?" He hadn't meant for it to come out as a question, but it seemed to anyway.

"I do know that it is a sin," Jeannot murmured, sliding his eyes away from the doctor, feeling as though he was on trial-- or worse, being accused by Henry again. "How could I not know?" He hugged himself tightly, worried what Watson would think of him. "I know that it is immoral, unnatural, tainted-- yes. And that I still sleep with men, despite knowing that God hates it, makes me a sinner of the worst kind, as evil as a murderer or a thief, but..." Jeannot sighed and shrugged, helpless to explain. "I am weak after all, you see," he said quietly, closing his eyes tightly, not wanting to look up and face his new friend's scorn or disgust.

Watson stood, a little stunned, looking down at Jeannot, who had just articulated everything that he had been thinking for the past eight years. He reached out again for Jeannot's hand, and pressed it. "No weaker than I," he said, voice quiet, in an attempt at comforting him.

Jeannot squeezed Watson's hand gratefully, looking up at him with sad blue eyes. "I think you are stronger than I will ever be, my friend," he told him, thinking of the steadfast way Watson bore the news that Holmes was not faithful to him alone. "But I thank you nonetheless," he added softly, meaning it truthfully. Jeannot stood, shakily, still clasping Watson's hand as though his life depended on it, and looked at Gabe again, wishing once more that he could forget all of this and wake up in his own bed with his lover.

"And you are very welcome," Watson replied, smiling gently. "I don't think myself particularly strong. It is only the working in so many dangerous situations. I am obligated to learn to keep a calm head."

Jeannot nodded. "My friend Henri is studying to be a doctor as well," he said, determinedly fixing upon any topic which was not likely to start him crying again. "You might like him, I think. He is a very serious young man with a kind heart." Jeannot smiled, and looked up to see Holmes and Gabe coming toward them. He fixed his eyes on his love, happier than ever to see him, and stepped toward him, letting Watson's hand go as he went to Gabe's side.

Gabe brightened and gave Jeannot a chaste kiss on the lips. "Hello, bel," he said, happily, and then looked over at Watson, who looked considerably less happy. "Is he alright?" he asked softly, taking his love's hand.

"I might indeed," Watson agreed, glancing up as the two other men approached them. He almost reached out to take Holmes's arm, but stopped, remembering what he had heard of Zachary.

Jeannot hesitated at Gabe's question, twining his fingers with the other man's as he glanced at Holmes, not certain what to say. "He has told me a bit about himself," he finally said, giving Watson an encouraging smile, seeing his reluctance to touch Holmes. "Do you know, aimé, that Watson is a doctor like Henri?"

"I did," Gabe replied, moving slightly closer to Jeannot, glad that he had not shied away. "He and Holmes are quite the celebrities in my time, remember." He glanced at Holmes here, signifying that he wouldn't disclose anything important about the nature of the celebrity.

"Yes, Watson, your somewhat over romantic chronicles of my cases seem to have been quite the success in Rosenburg's time." Holmes gave his first really relaxed, genuine smile in several days. "You are a famous author, my friend."

Jeannot glanced uncomfortably at Holmes, feeling yet more ill at ease around him after his discussion with Watson about the unknown man at the bar. He shook his head, determined not to bring it up, and turned his smile on Watson. "A writer as well?" he asked. "You did not tell me that, my friend." Jeannot curled his arm around Gabe's waist. "Gabe is a writer too," he told the other two men, for lack of anything better to talk about.

Gabe laughed. "Unlike me," he said, cheerily if self-deprecating. "He has the distinct advantage of being any good." He kissed Jeannot affectionately on the top of the head. "I've read a good amount of your stories," he remarked, turning to Watson. "When I was younger, anyway, and had slightly more time for books. I quite enjoyed them."

"Oh my - really?" This deluge of compliments was beginning to make Watson go quite red. "Thank you very much, Mr. Rosenburg. I should greatly enjoy reading something of yours someday, I'm sure you are not half so untalented as you pretend." He studiously did not look at Holmes, a feeling of angry resentment beginning to tighten into a knot in his stomach.

Holmes stiffened, aware that something was wrong, but attempted to ignore it. "I am glad you find you have ground in common with Watson, Rosenburg. You shall be together for quite some time."

Seeing the look on Watson's face, Jeannot pressed closer to Gabe, not wanting to be blamed when Holmes found out what he had told the doctor. "And how long will that be, M. Holmes?" he asked, hoping to avoid that touchy subject for as long as possible.

"As long as it takes for me to do something about the problem of Moriarty, M. Bonnaire," Holmes explained. "And no, Watson, I shall not accept your help."

"I wasn't going to offer it," Watson said evenly, skewering Holmes with a hurt look.

Holmes sputtered for a moment, unsure, and then was silent.

"It could take him some time, bel," Gabe said, giving Holmes a puzzled look. Watson's reaction was entirely not what he had been expecting. Things between the two Victorians were even more stilted than before. What, he wondered, had changed? He decided to ponder it later, perhaps ask Jeannot's opinion, and gave him a smile before continuing. "But we'll have our own room, and there's a cot we can set up, as well. I even saw a set of paints in the closet, if you want them."

((Is this a Magical Kinky Cravat Sex Closet, where anything can happen? ;-D ))

Jeannot dropped his eyes, feeling guilty that he had caused this rift between Holmes and Watson. He looked up after a moment at Gabe's words, smiling. "I would love to have the paints, aimé," he said, truly happy. At least he would have something to do, even if it meant painting each of the men here a hundred times. Jeannot glanced around at the bare walls and shook his head at how unwelcoming it all was. "Perhaps we might decorate this place a bit, as well," he suggested, looking at Holmes questioningly, hoping that would be allowed.

"Yes, you are a painter, are you not," Holmes said without a question mark. "I knew it from the moment I saw all the specks on your clothes." He gestured absently at the paint on Jeannot's coat.. "Never quite get it out, do you? Turpentine is best for oil," Holmes volunteered, not saying how he knew this.

Watson remained silent, in uncomfortable anticipation of Holmes's certain interrogation as to why he was so taciturn, but it did not come.

Jeannot nodded at Holmes's suggestion. "We do use turpentine to thin the paints," he said, "so I suppose it might work well to use for cleaning as well." He looked at Watson, hoping that his new friend would be all right, and tugged at Gabe's hand. "Will you show me the paints?" he asked, hoping to have a moment alone with his lover, to get away from all this tension in the air between Holmes and Watson.

"Of course," Gabe answered, glad for any excuse to leave the two Victorians to their staring match. One could cut the repression with a knife, and he didn't like it. He led Jeannot into the closet, closing the door part way to afford both couples a bit of privacy.

It occurred to him that he hadn't made out in a closet since high school, but he pushed that thought to the top of his mind. "There's a few different kind of paints there," he said, and pointed. "And then there's a few cans of wall-paint on the floor, if you want those." He sighed, relieved to be free of the Victorianism he feared was contagious. "G-d," he murmured. "Just when I thought the two of them couldn't get more awkward."

Jeannot stood with his hands behind his back, surveying the wonders of the closet with wide eyes. He didn't recognize most of what was in there, and even the paints were in some sort of odd metallic-looking containers. Gabe's last words made him start and look up guiltily, though. "That is my fault, aimé," he said quietly, hoping that the other two could not hear them, with the door half-closed. Jeannot sighed and reached out for Gabe's hand again, tracing the shape of his knuckles with one finger. "I should never have mentioned it," he whispered. "But-- Watson is married, and I thought that meant..." He trailed off, shaking his head at his own stupidity, and glanced up at Gabe, feeling terrible. "He is such a good man, and I made him upset," he murmured, guilty again.
